Yip, New Paints

Special Effect PaintsToday saw the release of the long rumoured and long awaited Citadel special effects paints, a set with 5 new technical paints and 1 new dry paint. Designed to make weathering a lot easier and do a couple of nifty tricks, they are going to get a hell of a lot of use.

They are available to buy directly from Games Workshop as a one click collection priced at £15.15, or individually at £2.40 the same price as other Citadel paints and 15p cheaper than expected, I was under the impression that they would cost £2.55 like the Edge paints.

Anyway the girls I live with arranged to pick up all six for me this morning, I originally asked if they could pick up just Blood for the Blood God and Agrellan Earth when one of them was in Newcastle, but they go me all six, so yay!

Anyway, Games Workshop have done something fantastic as well and published some YouTube videos on how to use these wonderful paints, so here they are.

Rebuilding Space Marines for 6e

337937_10150548561016860_99206034_o
Knowledge is power, guard it well
I have three main 40k armies, Orks, Dark Angels and Space Marines, I am also building up slowly a Chaos Space Marine army as well, and have plans for a small detachment of Blood Angels to ally with my Dark Angels, but that’s not what I am writing about.

So two of my armies now have 6th Edition Codex's, the Dark Angels and Space Marines and well I am only figuring out how to adapt them to 6e properly, so here goes.

My space marines are Blood Ravens, and before you say it, no its not because of Dawn of War, its because I actually like the colour scheme!

Anyway my list was for 1800 points which was what tended to be played at my Games Workshop and it looked like this.

HQ Librarian with Terminator armour and a storm bolter
HQ Chaplin with a jump pack
Troop Tactical Squad, 10 Marines with a flamer and heavy bolter with a Rhino, Sgt with Melta Bombs
Troop Tactical Squad, 10 Marines with a meltagun and multimelta split into combat squads with the special/heavy weapons in a Razorback, Sgt with Melta Bombs
Troop Scout Squad, 5 scouts with camo cloaks, 4 sniper rifles and missile launcher
Dedicated Transport Rhino with dozer blade
Dedicated Transport Razorback with dozer blade and T/L Lascannon
Elites Terminator Squad , 5 Marines
Elites Dreadnaught with multimelta, DCCW with storm bolter
Fast Attack Assault Squad, 10 Marines, two flamers, Sgt carrying a storm shield, power weapon and melta bombs
Heavy Support Devastator Squad, 5 Marine, 4 missile launchers
Heavy Support Whirlwind with a storm bolter, hunter-killer missile and extra armour
Heavy Support Vindicator with a storm-bolter, siege shield and extra armour

The taskforce was not good at excelling at anything brilliantly, but it was all about flexibility, it could in 5e react to most threats, not brilliant, but it gave me a win ratio of just under 50% which was ok by me cause I play for fun. It got me a decent place at a tourney at Warhammer World, so it made me happy.

So what can I do to adapt it to the new 6e codex, which by the way is pretty awesome!

Well when I have played with it since 6e dropped, I have been torn apart by flyers, that's the key weakness my Marines now have, also games have escalated points wise to 2000 points, so I have been adding another Tactical Squad of 10 marines on foot with a missile launcher and flamer to make up the points.

So using the new codex this is how I am thinking of adapting them to 6e.

HQ Librarian with Terminator armour and a storm bolter
HQ Chaplin with a jump pack
Troop Tactical Squad, 10 Marines with a flamer and heavy bolter with a Rhino, Veteran Sgt with Melta Bombs
Troop Tactical Squad, 10 Marines with a meltagun and multimelta split into combat squads with the special/heavy weapons in a Razorback, Veteran Sgt with Melta Bombs
Troop Scout Squad, 5 scouts with a heavy bolter with hellfire shells, 2 shotguns, Veteran Sgt with Melta Bombs & Teleport homer
Troop Scout Squad, 5 scouts with camo cloaks, 4 sniper rifles and missile launcher, Veteran Sgt
Dedicated Transport Rhino with dozer blade
Dedicated Transport Razorback with dozer blade and T/L Lascannon
Elites Terminator Squad, 5 Marines
Elites Dreadnaught with multimelta, DCCW with storm bolter
Fast Attack Assault Squad, 10 Marines, two flamers, Sgt carrying a combat shield, power weapon and melta bombs, Veteran Sgt
Fast Attack Stormtalon Gunship with Skyhammer missile launcher
Heavy Support Devastator Squad, 5 Marine, 4 missile launchers, Veteran Sgt
Heavy Support Whirlwind with a storm bolter, hunter-killer missile and extra armour
Heavy Support Vindicator with a storm-bolter, siege shield and extra armour
Fortification Aegis Defence Line with Quad Gun
My thinking here is the additional scout squad with the teleport homer can use their scout move to get somewhere that the Teleport homer can be used to get the Terminators where they can do some decent damage. The Defence Line can be used by the sniper scouts as additional cover and also keep the skies clear of enemy fliers whilst my Stormtalon rains down death from the skies.

At least that's the plan, again, its not a list that designed to be the best at all things, but is supposed to be balanced, able to react to most threats and hopefully I can get a 50%ish win ratio with it.

Anyway I have everything for it built, painted and ready to go, bar the Stormtalon, which is still in its box from when I got the flyers on release day, I just loved the Dakkajet and had to build that first and I forgot about the Stormtalon until I moved house and found it.

However the paintjobs on these guys are well, dreadful, so the girls I live with are out buying me some nail polish remover so I can strip them and repaint them, hopefully better than I had done them before.
So next time I will talk about my great and terrible Dark Angels!

#SAVETHEDAY Extended Trailer

So this is the extended Dr Who 50th Anniversary Special Trailer.

Is that the Moment that the Council of Time Lords spoke of in the End of Time Part 2, I spy there?
President of the Time Lords: What news of the Doctor?
The Chancellor: Disappeared, my Lord President.
The Partisan: But we know his intention. He still possesses the Moment. And he’ll use it to destroy Daleks and Time Lords alike.
The Chancellor: The Visionary confirms it.
The Visionary: Ending. Burning. Falling. All of it, falling. The black, and pitch. And screaming fire. Soul burning.
The Chancellor: All of her prophecies say the same. That this is the last day of the Time War. That Gallifrey falls. That we die. Today.
And what's up with scruffy bad wolf Rose, especially as she says
Rose: “The Moment is coming”
So is it she that helps the Hurt Doctor end the Last Great Time war, destroying Gallifrey and the Time Lords?

From watching the trailer again and again, I think we are getting 10 around the time of his marriage to Queen Elizabeth the 1st and he and 11 travel to the time war, but is it scruffy bad wolf rose that brings them together, who knows.

Also lots of cool things in what appears to be the UNIT base, the photos of past companions, 4s scarf, and a Dalek gun. The battle could very well be the Fall of Arcadia as spoken of by 10 in Doomsday.
DALEK SEC: How did you survive the Time War?
10th DOCTOR:By fighting. On the front line. I was there at the Fall of Arcadia. Someday I might even come to terms with that.
Yeah so the 23rd is gonna be awesome, only problem I have is that its also Smoggycon that day and I am going to play some Munchkin, and I gotta get the bus back, I should be able to get back in time to get sat down have a cup of tea and order a pizza ready for the big show, oh and did I mention that its in 3D!!!

Painting a Realm of Battle Board Part 2

So a couple of weeks ago I posted the first part of how I have done my Realm of Battle Game Board, and its taken a little while to finish due to illness and life etc, but here is, for the most part, my finishing of it. Unfortunately for the some of the various dry brushing stages I forgot to take photos so I did the same on the Battlescape scenery piece and used photos from that to illustrate what I did
So here is the Battlescape after the ink has dried.
IMG_3838
So I take the brown from the Citadel Scenery Painting Pack and dry brush this over the inked brown to bring back the mid-tone.
IMG_3836
Then I take the ochre and I dry brush that over the brown to bring up a light colour.
IMG_3832
Now its looking ok, there are places where you can see my brush marks, but they aren’t that bad, especially as I will be covering it with flock.
For the rocky areas, the girls I live with kinda ganged up on me and convinced me that where the brown I painted meets the grey, it looked unnatural, so against my better judgement, I resprayed those areas to make it seem more natural, well that didn’t work that well as some brown areas were hot with grey so I had to repaint them in brown and ink them again, so there are some differences in the soil tone around the rocky areas, but it doesn't look terrible and in fact adds to the non-uniform look I was hoping to get.
IMG_3821
Anyway so I repaint the areas that got hit with grey accidently with the brown, and then hit that and the grey with the same ink mixture that I did the rest of the brown area and leave this to dry overnight.
IMG_3825
IMG_3833
So the next step with the grey is to dry brush it up to the colour I want. I start with Dawnstone and dry brush that over all of the rock and stone areas. Then I follow that up with a dry brush of Administratum Grey. And here is the finished rocks.
IMG_3843
For the areas that look like they used to be road, well I want them to stand out a bit more, so I take some Rakarth Flesh, and drybrush that over them to try and give me the apperence of once well worked stone that has now worn away, but still has patches of its former glory there.
IMG_3855
And now the dreaded skull pits! For these we followed a tried and tested method, we painted them in Rakarth Flesh, dry brushed with Ushabti Bone, dry brushed with White Scar and then washed with Agrax Earthshade.
IMG_3860
The next stage is a little alien to me, but I wanted to weather the board with moss and algae on the rocks and road, so I had a selection of greens and the Faded Green weathering powder from Forgeworld. But one of the girls I lived with kind of took over and I have no idea what she did, I might have to get her to post on here and tell me what she did! But here are some photos.
IMG_3857
IMG_3880
IMG_3881
IMG_3885
IMG_3892
IMG_3910
So on to the flock! We took the PVA glue from the scenery painting kit and mixed it 50:50 with water and the painted it on the board, there were two of this so it was a pretty easy task.
IMG_3911
Then we took the green grass and sprinkled it on the board, all around and in some concentrated areas as well.
IMG_3913
Then we sprinkled on the scorched grass flock.
IMG_3914
And this is what we ended up with.
IMG_3915
But obviously this is way more on there when we need so we tip the board on to an awaiting bit of wrapping paper to collect the stuff that hasn’t gotten stuck on with glue so we can recycle it.
IMG_3916
IMG_3917
So once its all done we end up with this.
IMG_3918
Now I leave this to dry overnight and when the PVA glue is good and dry I take a brush and start to roughly brush off the flock that hasn’t really gotten stuck down.
IMG_3922
I even take my hand and rub the board to really get the barely stuck on stuff off, leavening some quite patchy areas where the glue wasn’t as thick.
IMG_3923
And then this is the end result.
IMG_3925
I am not done yet, I need to get it all up on the table for a game and finish off some scenery for some games. I also want to get some Mordheim Turf to put in the big cracks in the road, and then get some matt varnish to spray the board with to protect it.
One last word, why have I gone with a green field board, instead of the urban city of death I love the look of, or the icy wastes of a snowy death world? While its true I mostly play 40k, I am trying to play a lot more WFB, I have a large Empire army which is barely used and the girls I live with have an Island of Blood set between them, meaning I have some High Elves and Skaven to wage war against, perhaps even with the new Triumph and Treachery expansion (yes that is a hint, I want!!!)
But seriously green is a neutral and very flexible scheme, and can work with both 40k, fantasy and if I ever decide to paint my Cygnar army, perhaps even Warmachine, but that would require me learning to play Warmachine properly and I really don’t like it that much, or really at all, (sorry PP but steampunk dreadnaughts just don’t do it for me).
